In Australia, Helicoil compatible NuCoil thread inserts and kits for repair or recoiling stripped threads or for use in manufacturing are available in sizes from 2mm to 65mm or #2-56 UN to 1-1/2″ (bigger on special order). In aerospace and nuclear equipment, wire thread inserts are used from new. Instead of tapping direct into parent metals wire inserts are used because they distribute stress more evenly than any other type of thread. NuCoil thread inserts come in many thread forms including Metric coarse and fine, UNC and UNF, BSW, BSF, BA, Sparkplug and many special sizes
Wire thread inserts are the most popular and economical way to repair stripped threads or reinforce threads in metals. The NuCoilTM range is one of the most extensive in the world including a wide range of standard sizes and a range of special sizes to suit almost any industrial our automotive application. NuCoil kits come in a reusable plastic box and contain the three basic items needed for thread repair or reinforcement, a intermediate NuCoil tap, a fitting tool, and five standard length inserts.
NuCoil taps are high quality high speed steel ground thread taps. Hand taps are available in
taper, intermediate and bottoming leads. Intermediate taps are supplied as standard unless
otherwise specified. A special pilot nose tap which ensures that the repaired hole is properly
aligned is supplied in spark plug kits. Spiral point and spiral flute machine taps are also available
Materials
Standard NuCoil inserts are made from 18-8 stainless steel, alternative materials such as inconelare available as factory specials, Length The length of a NuCoil insert is specified as a proportion of the diameter of the insert. The standard lengthis 1.5xdiameter of the insert, this is denotedas 1.5D. Inserts are also available in ID, 2D and 3D lengthsThe pack sizes for standard 1.5D length inserts are listed on page 7
Accessories such as NuCoilTM Plug Gauges, Coil RemovalTools, and replacement fitting tools are also available. Pneumatic fitting tools and tang break-off punches are available for production applications.
Drill: to remove anydamaged threads or create a new hole. (not necessary for kits containing a pilot nosed tap).
Fit the insert: using the tool provided, press downwards, and rotate the tool clockwise until the insert is approximately 1/2 a turn below the surface.
Tap the hole: using the NuCoilTM insert tap included in the kit.
Break off the tang: By using one of two method Method 1) place a snug fitting punch into the hole and hit down sharply (the fitting tool can be used as a punch in larger sizes by removing it from the hole, turning it 1/4 of a turn and placing it down on the tang). Method 2) grip the tang with long nose pliers and agitate it up and down until it breaks.
Important never break the tang by twisting it.
